Folks —
Black History Month gives us time to reflect on the countless contributions that Black leaders across the country have provided to move us towards a more equitable society.
This month, I’m remembering the contributions of so many Black leaders who pushed the needle further in the fight for equal rights. Trailblazers like Shirley Chisholm and Barack Obama, literary icons Toni Morrison and the recently passed bell hooks, and groundbreaking creatives like Sidney Poitier have all played a unique role in the fight for equal rights.
But, let’s be clear: to acknowledge Black History Month also means acknowledging that the fight for equality is not yet over.
We’re continuing to see instances where equal justice falls short, equal access to voting is further stripped away, and the promise of an equal education isn’t fulfilled. It’s on all of us to ensure that we’re not only fighting for an end to these shortcomings but that we’re also uplifting Black voices in the process.
Let’s use this month to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the African American community while also committing to improve equal rights in our society wherever and whenever we can.
In solidarity,
Susie Lee
