We want to introduce you to Parwana, a little girl in Afghanistan. At 4 years old, Parwana weighed less than 20 pounds – half what she should. She had little energy and felt intense discomfort. Parwana’s mother brought her to a UNICEF-supported health facility, where she was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and given lifesaving Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) treatments, which helped Parwana regain strength. Within just two weeks, her cheeks were rosy, she was smiling, and she’d gained two pounds.
In Afghanistan, the number of malnourished children like Parwana is on the rise. An estimated 3.2 million children under the age of 5 are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition in the coming year, with 1 million of them at risk of death unless urgent action is taken.
Preventing and treating malnutrition are some of UNICEF’s most critical efforts, especially in countries like Afghanistan, where UNICEF is the sole RUTF supplier. Understanding the scope of this work can be complex, so we’ve brought in a UNICEF nutrition expert to help break things down.
Using the form below, ask our nutrition expert anything — from questions about how you can help prevent children from ever experiencing malnutrition to what it will take to help malnourished children survive — and we’ll follow up with answers.

UNICEF is doing everything possible to keep children safe in the face of rising malnutrition rates — from rushing hundreds of thousands of RUTF packets to places of need and investing in health programs to prioritizing early detection and treatment of malnutrition.
It will require all of us to ensure children are protected. Please take a moment to share what you want to know about malnutrition and UNICEF’s global response.
Keep an eye on your inbox for a follow-up with answers, plus an upcoming opportunity to bring more vitally needed nutrition treatment to children around the world.
Thank you for making UNICEF’s lifesaving work possible,
UNICEF USA
