Happy Black History Month, John!
Today, I want to touch on this year's Black History Month theme: "Black Health & Wellness." The pandemic uncovered what many of us already knew: there is a widespread disparity of access to quality health care for Black and Brown people. Inequity and injustice in health care have deep roots that take us back centuries — from "Whites Only" hospitals to racist malpractice.
Today, there continues to be an alarming vaccine gap between white Americans and Black Americans. Black Americans still have a lower average life expectancy than white Americans. And Black people are at a higher risk of catching the deadly virus and of severe disease and death from COVID-19.
We can't ignore that it's Black people — especially Black women — who have been serving on the frontlines of this pandemic since Day One. We can't ignore that these workers are often disrespected, overworked, and underpaid. And we can't ignore that as our economy has started to rebuild — Black workers continue to see a higher jobless rate despite market recovery.
Racial justice and economic justice go hand-in-hand — you can't tackle one without addressing the other. "Black Health & Wellness" is a call to action to remain engaged in the present movement for racial and social justice, especially in health care.
This Black History Month, I encourage you to examine how the pandemic has impacted Black and Brown Americans. Our lives — Black lives — are on the ballot this year, including our fight for accessible health care, fair wages, racial justice, and voting rights. It's time for all of us to recommit to fighting for racial and social justice at the ballot box this November.
And if you're able, you can join me in taking part in Black History Month celebrations happening around Philly this month. See what's happening around the block at Visit Philadelphia and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
In solidarity,
Dwight
