John,

Iowa is home to more than 203,000 veterans.

After dedicating themselves to serving our country—which often means putting themselves in danger and being separated from their families for long periods of time—our veterans come home to a country that doesn’t uphold its oath to them. They need job training, educational training, and transitional guidance when they return to civilian life. They need robust and accessible mental and physical health services.

Yet more than 4% are unemployed. More than 6% live in poverty. More than 16% have service-related disabilities. Just over 27,000 live in homes that report problems of quality, crowding, or cost; about 18.3% of Iowa’s veterans have trouble affording their homes. In a comprehensive analysis of veteran suicides released by Veterans Affairs in 2016, the VA found that 75 veterans commit suicide in Iowa every year.

How does our government respond to the ever-degrading state of affairs for our veterans? Well, here’s just a sample: our current senator has voted four times to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Such rollbacks would impact the health care coverage that more than 8,000 Iowa veterans depend on. Accessing health care is already difficult for the thousands of rural Iowa veterans who have to drive long distances just to get to the nearest VA hospital.

They need the care and support they were promised and that they deserve.

Unlike the incumbent, I’ll fight for the services our veterans desperately need. I won’t use veterans as a campaign prop, make empty promises to protect them and their well-being, or limit my support of them to just one day a year.

Isn’t it time we fought for them they way that they’ve fought for us?

Onward to justice for all!
