Friend,
Throughout the pandemic we have relied heavily on low-wage essential workers, those who stock our shelves, deliver our food, and drive us to and from where we need to go. With the cost of living going up, we can’t wait any longer for the market to value these people appropriately. It is time we take action to ensure that essential workers are paid a living wage, and get rid of the stigma that low-wage equals low-skill.

That is why I will be introducing legislation to pin the minimum wage to the rate of inflation. I wrote about it in an op-ed for Teen Vogue to continue the conversation about destigmatizing low-wage workers and giving working people the basics they need for a dignified life. ([link removed])

With the exception of a few notable sectors, the minimum wage in New York City is $15 an hour. A statewide path to $15 waspassed by the New York State Legislature in the 2016-17 State Budget ([link removed]) and created a phase-in process that allowed each region to get to $15 incrementally. The movement known as theFight for 15 ([link removed]) started four years earlier, when 200 fast-food workers in New York City walked off the job, demanding a living wage, and has since bought together a strong coalition of unions and expanded across the country, even leading a successful push for a ballot measure that established a $15 minimum wage in solidly red Florida in 2020 ([link removed]) . The Fight for 15 exemplifies a belief I hold dearly from my time in the labor movement, and as the Chair of the New York State Senate’s Labor Committee: so-called
low-skill workers can win big when they are organized.
