John —

As we start Black History Month, I feel it’s fair to remind everyone that Black History is American History and how we teach that history to the American youth matters. This means students should learn that America is a great nation built in large part by those who were never given a voice. Our students should also be taught that we have sometimes fallen short of our promise of equality and that we all have more work to do. If we do not teach the truth in our history classes then we will continue to fall victim to the same traps as before.

That being said, Black History is not just about the oppression and roadblocks Black Americans have faced. Its about our ability to persevere and overcome despite all odds. Whether it’s athletics, politics, food, music, science, television, history, activism, religion, etc., the Black Community has continued to leave its mark and prove its excellence. These accomplishments should be highlighted and celebrated. Let us all continue to work together and make the best of our future.

Thanks for your support,

Tim Alexander
