Folks,

Today is the first day of Black History Month, and a perfect time for us to commemorate, honor, and recommit ourselves to the work of Black Americans.

Black history has always been American history. As a third-generation Selmian, it is humbling to know that my community had such an influential role in crafting the fabric of this nation.

Today, I recognize that I am standing on the shoulders of every Black leader, pioneer, and trailblazer who came before me — and it’s because of them that I have the honor of serving as Alabama’s first Black congresswoman.

As the representative of the nation’s Civil Rights District, I know it’s my duty to carry the baton and continue on the path to equity for all.

I encourage all of us to reflect on how we can continue to uplift and amplify Black voices, achievements, stories, and communities — not just this month, but every day of the year.

In solidarity,

Terri Sewell
