John,
AFGE proudly celebrates Black History month and we are honored to uplift the voices of Black working families.
AFGE activists and leaders continue to pave the way in supporting our diverse communities. In June 2021, the AFGE National Executive Council officially adopted a resolution making AFGE B.L.A.C.K. (Black Leadership Advancing Change and Knowledge) a permanent constituency group and program of AFGE under the Women’s and Fair Practices Departments (WFP).
AFGE B.L.A.C.K. is committed to ending systemic racism in the workplace, the community, and the criminal justice system. The group is dedicated to fighting for fair and equitable treatment of people of color and other marginalized communities.
AFGE B.L.A.C.K. will address the racial justice and equity work on behalf of our members and their families both in the workplace and the community, including systemic criminal justice reform, cultural competency and implicit bias training, anti-racist policies, and supporting the efforts of our allies in the racial justice movement.
This year, WFP will be hosting its annual Civil Rights Luncheon at the 2022 AFGE Legislative Conference, which has been rescheduled for March. In conjunction with AFGE B.L.A.C.K., WFP also will be hosting three virtual Black History Month events later this month. Please be on the lookout for more information from WFP soon.
In Solidarity,
AFGE
P.S. There's just a few hours left to nominate an AFGE activist for the Augusta Y. Thomas Civil Rights Awards! National Vice President Emeritus Thomas was a Black civil rights icon and we are honored to carry on her memory through the work of our federation.
