Friend,

Today begins our celebration of Black History Month -- a time to remember and rejoice in Black power, Black heroes and sheroes, Black excellence, and Black lives. Over centuries, the contributions of Black people have shaped our state, our country, and our Democratic Party into what it is today.

I am proud to be Black and to hold my own piece of Black History as the first Black Executive Director of our State Party. This month, I join you in remembering those who came before us, honoring their resilience, and uplifting the ways we continue to make history today as we pave the way for a better tomorrow.

Through the unspeakable crime of slavery, through the lasting injustices of Jim Crow, we have endured -- and have always pushed forward towards the dream of a more just America.

We’ve diligently held onto our faith in a better future, and led the way towards it -- from giants like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Barbara Jordan, and John Lewis, to the millions more who have fought for change in their own communities, one day at a time.

We’ve come incredibly far, but we still have so far to go. Our fight for change continues as we work to put an end to police brutality, to make voting rights a reality, and to topple the barriers that remain a boot on the neck of our communities.

But Friend, our most powerful line of defense is our voice. And the best way to overcome attacks on our liberty is to go to the polls and cast a ballot for justice.

There’s still so much work to be done but the promise of democracy is ours to fulfill. The promise of an America where every individual can experience liberty and justice.

Black Lives Matter. Black history is American history. We continue to forge a path to that better America, and Black voices and strength are leading the way.

We’ll get there. Because we won’t rest until we do.

In service and hope,

Jamarr Brown
