POPULATION MATTERS SUPPORTERS' UPDATE
JANUARY 2022
Dear John,
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2022! We hope you've had a restful
festive break and a great start to the new year.
This month, we're particularly excited about our new Choice Ambassadors -
inspiring young people who recognise the crucial intersection of
environmental and social crises, and who are doing amazing work to advance
empowering solutions.
In this Update, you'll also find a critique of the BBC's recent 'Rethink'
radio programme dedicated to population, a news story on how China's food
demand could impact the environment, and information on the Catholic
Church's influence on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Thanks for you continued support,
Olivia Nater
Digital and Communications Manager
_PS: We're working on making some small changes to our monthly newsletter -
if you have any feedback for us, we'd love to hear from you by return
email._

POPULATION
The BBC on population: Re-treading a well-worn path
Human population dynamics, impacts and challenges are rarely raised or
discussed in any depth on mainstream media. So the fact that the BBC gave
over one of its flagship Radio 4 ‘Rethink’ series to population should
be welcomed by anyone interested in better understanding this crucial, but
overlooked, issue. Unfortunately, the programme had some major
shortcomings. PM Director Robin Maynard and Researcher Monica Scigliano
explain.

There is no Plan(et) B, folks
_"I am gradually getting convinced of two things: one, all this ozone
rattling by various COPs is getting us nowhere; and two, that economists do
not live on the same planet that you and I do."_
This op-ed in _The Citizen India_ provides a welcome criticism of
politicians' and economists' push for ever more births to sustain economic
growth.

for animal products, will lead to significant climate emissions and habitat
loss.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS & SEXUAL HEALTH
From pulpit to politics: the influence of the Catholic Church
Pope Francis recently accused people who have pets but one or no children
of selfishness. Nothing could be further from the truth. PM's Monica
Scigliano provides some context for the Pope’s remarks by examining the
Catholic Church’s damaging positions and actions on sexual and
reproductive rights.
