Dear John
All eyes have been on Boris Johnson’s shocking inability
to work out whether he was at a party or not…
Meanwhile, the Government attempts
to distract us. Just this week, they published a new “Benefits of
Brexit” report, setting up their promised new Brexit Freedoms Bill.
Aren’t we lucky?
I haven’t, up till now, noticed
many benefits…and I’ve been paying close attention.
We’ve had a look through the report
and while it’s full of the expected overblown rhetoric, it is also
(surprise!) a brand new affront to democracy.
Not content with trashing the
fairness of our elections, and stamping out our freedom to protest,
this report proposes to change the law to allow Government Ministers
to rip up retained EU laws whenever they feel like it and bypass
parliamentary scrutiny in the process.
These retained EU laws cover a wide
range of things we take for granted, and I’m not suggesting EU laws
should be retained indefinitely in UK law ‘just because’. But what I
do think is important, and I think most Brits would agree, is that we
should not roll back British standards on food, the environment,
animal welfare, workers’ rights, or anything else.
Currently, changes to legislation
must be debated in Parliament and approved by MPs. The Government
wants to give itself new powers to change the law through secondary
legislation - meaning Parliament will not necessarily have to be
consulted.
In the name of efficiency, this
Government is pushing for more power, less accountability and
ultimately lower British standards. Sign our petition to tell the
Government you won’t stand for this bogus idea of Brexit
freedoms.
Brexit has not brought us freedom.
Regional inequality abounds, red tape burdens our small businesses,
our standards are being cut. And the Government wants to make it
harder for us to challenge it over these things. All in the name of
sovereignty.
So put pressure on this Government while you still can and
sign the petition today.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
