John,

Today we honor all the men and women who have faithfully served our country and answered the call of duty to protect our freedoms. We thank you for your service and sacrifice.

It’s clear that we don’t do enough to take care of our veterans once they come home. From health care to education to job prospects, we know that so many of our vets don’t have the support they need to build their lives as civilians. We have to keep fighting for these things, and I will continue to be a voice in Congress to advocate for them every single day.

But today, I also want to highlight something I’ve talked about a lot this year — veterans’ mental health and post-traumatic stress.

I shared for the first time on the presidential campaign my own experience dealing with post-traumatic stress after four combat tours in Iraq. And I spent a lot of time focusing on some tangible things we could do to combat mental health challenges for veterans and civilians alike. Here’s what we proposed and continue to fight for:

1. Establish a three-digit-number as a National Mental Health Hotline. Every day, more than 22 veterans and active duty servicemembers are lost to suicide. We need a well-known, simple number to dial for help.
2. Make mental health check-ups as routine as a physical for active-duty military and veterans. My plan will provide routine mental health checkups for the military, double the number of Department of Defense mental health professionals, raise the Department’s mental health budget, and invest in the VA’s mental health programs to make it the gold standard in America.
3. End the stigma around mental health. We can establish the importance of mental health at a young age by funding yearly health screenings for every high schooler in America, thus ending the stigma among our youth before it has a chance to take root.

Thank you for standing with me on Veterans Day and every day. The issues we are working on are important for veterans and civilians alike, and if we continue fighting together, we can make a difference in the lives of all Americans.

Happy Veterans Day,

Seth
