Dear John,
Veterans Day is personal to me because of my father. After becoming the first in his family to graduate from college, my dad enrolled in the Marines to serve his country. His career took him across the globe and back many times. When I was in kindergarten, he was gone for most of the year serving in Desert Storm. Being the daughter of a Marine shaped my upbringing.
I’m proud of his service, and he’s worked hard to provide for our family. I know the sacrifices military families make in service to protecting our democracy. That is why it is of the utmost importance to support our veterans after their service the same way they support us while they are serving our country.
I spent several years on the board of an organization called USA Cares, which provides financial and advocacy assistance to post-9/11 active duty US military service personnel, veterans and their families. Today, in honor of veterans’ service and sacrifice, please consider making a donation to USA Cares or a similar organization addressing the needs of veterans and service members
My dad is a first generation American, born in Queens. Serving in the military gave him opportunities that paved the way for me. His Irish immigrant parents never could have imagined that one day their granddaughter would be running for Congress.
Thank you to all of you and your families who have served. Without you, none of us would have the opportunity to pursue the American Dream.
All my best,
Lindsey
