America COMPETES Act would add tens of thousands of new green cards each year! Tell Congress to oppose!

Dear activists,

Later today, the House Rules Committee will meet to finalize the details and establish the debate rules for H.R. 4521, the America COMPETES Act. After the committee meets, the legislation will be ready to come to the House floor for a vote later this week.

As I noted in last week's newsletter, while the America COMPETES Act may make America more competitive in the global marketplace, it would do so at the expense of American workers here at home.

The legislation would:

  • Create a new unlimited W visa program for entrepreneurs and investors, their family members, and their employees. W visa holders who meet certain requirements would be eligible for an unlimited supply of green cards in as little as one year.
  • Allow foreign citizens who hold a doctoral degree from a U.S. university or college, or the equivalent from a foreign university, to obtain a green card above and beyond current numerical limits.
  • Establish a Special Immigrant Visa program for certain Hong Kong residents
  • Provides for an unlimited number of certain Hong Kong residents to receive asylum/refugee status.
  • Grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and work permits to Hong Kong residents currently in the U.S., regardless of immigration status.

The bottom line is that the America COMPETES Act would result in an endless stream of new foreign workers across all wage levels to the detriment of American workers who are forced to compete with them.

Please contact your U.S. Representative and urge him/her to oppose the America COMPETES Act!
