Hi, PublicSource readers! Chris here.
For the last four months, I’ve spoken with historians, archivists, faith leaders and community members to unpack Pittsburgh’s religious past and understand how it shapes the present. The result? Faith, Race, Place. ([link removed])
Faith, Race, Place is a series of stories that shows how factors like immigration, racism, industry and geography have shaped how and where Pittsburghers worship. The stories were inspired by questions I’ve repeatedly heard in conversations, questions like: Who were the first Black Protestants ([link removed]) in the region? Why are there so many churches or synagogues ([link removed]) in my neighborhood? How did the Sri Venkateswara Temple ([link removed]) come to be?
The project also documents how today’s faith communities are working to heal historical divides or bring people of different religions, races and ethnicities together.
Faith, Race, Place is ready for you to explore. I’d love to know what you think.
