Congratulations to James for correctly identifying the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis). According to All About Birds, Dark-eyed Juncos are among the most abundant forest birds of North America, with one estimate of their population at 630 million individuals. They have a number of different morphs that are quite distinct – our mystery bird was an Oregon morph. A platform-style bird feeder with sunflower or safflower seeds will attract this snow bird to your yard.
