Dear John,

On this and every Veterans Day, I want to extend my gratitude to all the men and women who have served in our armed forces.

As we take a moment today to honor our service members, it’s just as important that we acknowledge and address the reality that the transition to civilian life for our veterans is oftentimes difficult and unforgiving.

I serve as a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and have the privilege of chairing the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. This committee has jurisdiction over veterans’ transition to civilian life -- including education and job training opportunities, veterans’ housing programs, and more.

I am proud to say that I have introduced six bipartisan bills in support of our veterans that have passed in the U.S. House. These bills have cut red tape at the Department of Veterans Affairs, created better counseling services for our returning vets, and improved our Transition Assistance Program.

It’s encouraging that we’ve made bipartisan progress when it comes to supporting service members, veterans, and their families -- but there’s still much more to do.

Today, and every day, let’s honor those who have served. And let’s recommit to doing better for those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Happy Veterans Day,

Mike
