Tomorrow, international oil giant Total Energies is expected to announce they have the green light to build what would be the world's biggest, heated oil pipeline in East Africa.
Despite committed and courageous opposition from the communities in Tanzania and Uganda who will be most affected by the project, it looks like Total will have the go-ahead to endanger water resources for millions, devastate vulnerable ecosystems, and push the world further into climate chaos.1
This is really bad news, John, but Total can’t build it if they can’t pay for it. Right now, they’re still short by at least $2.5 billion, which is why our pressure now is absolutely critical.
Eleven major banks have said no to this destructive, climate-wrecking project but American banks Citi and JPMorgan Chase are still potentially funding the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Momentum is building against Total’s pipeline all over the world. Just a few weeks ago activists from Uganda, Tanzania, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Australia, and France took to the streets in Grenoble, France to make it clear that EACOP breaches the Paris Climate Agreement and endangers communities.
Over a million people have raised their voices against EACOP and it’s working. Because of the pressure from our movement, eleven banks have refused to support the pipeline so far.
But there are eight other banks that are considering it, including big American banks Citi and JPMorgan Chase. If you can, take a minute to Tweet these banks now.
In the coming months, along with the Stop EACOP coalition and campaigners from 350 Africa, we will do all we can – standing in solidarity with those on the frontlines of this campaign in Uganda and Tanzania – to ensure that this climate-wrecking pipeline does not see the light of day.
