In 2022, Solidarity Remains Our Way Forward

For January 2022, Grassroots is looking at the year ahead, the social conditions impacting our and our partners’ work, and the stories of resistance and solution-building we’ll be sharing with our supporters.

From COVID relief to food sovereignty to defending Mother Earth, movements will continue organizing people power and building alternatives on multiple fronts. And Grassroots International will continue to lift up this work.

Families in Brazil Face Devastating Floods; Social Movements Respond

In Memory of Janet Axelrod

Our board member and long-time activist and philanthropic organizer Janet Axelrod died Sunday, 12/26, at her home in Cambridge, after a fierce 3-round battle with cancer.

Haitian Independence, Black Liberation, and a Legacy of Transnational Solidarity

January marks a key moment in Black liberation, the Haitian Revolution's 1804 victory. The first of a two-part article, “The Truth is Revolutionary,” looks at its global, ongoing impact.

New Colonialisms, Continuing Resistance in Haiti

For Part Two of “The Truth is Revolutionary,” Elegua looks at Haiti’s ongoing struggle against imperialism.

New (and Familiar) Faces Energize Grassroots

We recently welcomed several new staff members to the fold, including two ‘old friends’ who rejoined our team. Please join us in (re)welcoming:

Salena Tramel (she/her)

Salena is our first-ever Senior Global Learning Coordinator. She previously worked with our partners in the Middle East, Haiti, West Africa and Latin America! Salena started in her new role in July.

Owen Berson (they/them)

Owen Berson (they/them) jumped into the Philanthropic Partnerships Manager role in September. A strong activist and fundraiser for radical change, Owen works with institutional funders and family foundations.

Saulo Araujo (he/him)

Like Salena, Saulo Araujo (he/him) rejoined Grassroots International in a new role, this time as Director of Global Philanthropy. He brings deep roots in social movements and program work to the new adventure of mobilizing financial and solidarity resources.

Maggie Russell-Ciardi (she/her)

Maggie Russell-Ciardi (she/her) works closely with Saulo in leading the Development Team in her role as Managing Director of Donor Engagement, helping donors deepen their knowledge about our global partners and solidarity philanthropy.
