Friend,

Roy Steyer was many things — a pragmatic father to me and my two brothers, a devoted husband to my mother Marnie, and a lawyer who helped prosecute Nazis at Nuremberg. My father was also a veteran, and his commitment to serving this country has inspired me throughout my life.

Roy was a straightforward and exceptionally honest man. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he knew his country needed him, so he enlisted in the Navy. He took the oath that so many Americans take — to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. With that oath, servicemembers, like my father, commit to act in service of something greater than themselves.

But the people who take that sacred oath are owed our support in return. No matter who is in the Oval Office, our veterans deserve to come home to a country that welcomes them back with affordable housing, dedicated resources to help navigate the hurdles they must overcome, complete health care coverage — including mental health services — and access to good-paying jobs.

On this Veterans Day, and every day, veterans deserve our respect and our promise to take care of them and their families. I’m thinking of every brave servicemember and all they have done with great sacrifice.

I’m also thinking of my father, Roy, and what he taught me — to speak up and take action to do what’s right.

Thank you,

Tom
