Since she was 12 years old, Sophie’s been singing. More recently, she’s gotten involved in her community musical theater program and trained in cabaret performance. Two years ago, she decided to combine two passions -- performance and protecting the planet. “I care about all people and animals and our chance for a healthy living future. I take climate change seriously and am scared about it, so this is one concrete action I can take, while also following my passion of singing” Sophie articulated.

From there, Climate Cabaret was born! With Climate Cabaret, Sophie was able to not only raise money for Sierra Club, but also spread awareness and gather her community to give back. She rallied together a group of musicians, asked a teenage neighbor to give a speech about viewing the climate crisis as a young person, and invited everyone she knew. Friends and neighbors helped out with the logistics of the event and came to enjoy the evening as audience members. One of Sophie’s secrets to success? “I learned through this process, that it is good to tell everyone you know about the event! Even if someone can't come, they often surprised me by their excitement about what I was doing and willingness to donate to Sierra Club in honor of this event.”

Before her first Climate Cabaret a few years back, Sophie had never raised money before. And now, Sophie has raised over $1,000 for Sierra Club in the past few months! She was thrilled to see donations come in and was sometimes surprised at all of the amazing support she received -- whether through donations or spreading the word about her event. “Having a dedicated webpage on Team Sierra to highlight my particular fundraising event also made a huge difference, as it made it really easy for people to donate.” Sophie shares.

And as it turns out, music, community building, and saving the planet are only some of Sophie’s skills! She’s also a clown who’s developing her own clowning program to educate children about social justice and the environment -- and you can bet they’ll be singing, too!
