For the last two years, we have been fighting against the reckless and deadly home abortion policy which politicians in England, Wales and Scotland introduced after the abortion lobby took advantage of the fear and uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

In these two years, abundant evidence has been gathered on how dangerous this policy really is, and how bad it is for women.

The UK Governments have this evidence – it was included in the thousands of submissions made by pro-lifers to consultations on whether to continue the policy. Nearly a year later, there has been no response to these consultations.

The temporary policy is due to expire on 30 March 2022. Abortion providers are worried. The three leading abortion providers, BPAS, MSI Reproductive Choices, and NUPAS have written to the to the Minister for Vaccines and Public Health, Maggie Throup, saying that the consequences will be “disastrous” if the policy is withdrawn. BPAS have even set up a campaign for their supporters to tell the Minister that it would be “utterly cruel” to withdraw the policy.

Politicians must keep their promise

We know that what is “utterly cruel” is sending women pills for them to bleed their baby away at home, without even seeing a medical professional. Now is the time to remind our politicians of their promise that the home abortions policy would be a temporary emergency measure. Please write to your MP, asking him/her to lobby Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and Maggie Throup, Minister for Vaccines and Public Health. Key points to make are:
* The home abortions policy was a temporary approval during the COVID 19 pandemic. Now that the provisions of the Coronavirus Act are due to expire, so must the home abortion policy
* The policy was imposed with no parliamentary scrutiny
* Freedom of Information responses ([link removed]) from NHS Trusts in England show that 5.9% of women using medical abortion are subsequently treated in hospital for complications arising from an incomplete abortion
* Data from FOI requests to NHS Ambulance Services indicate that on average 36 women make 999 calls every month seeking medical assistance for complications arising from the taking of abortion pills
* The policy is impossible to regulate – a mystery client investigation found that fake aliases were able to obtain pills without identity checks or having to provide NHS numbers

If you live in Scotland or Wales, you can also contact your MSP/MS.
* Scotland: Ask your MSP to lobby Humza Yousaf MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. The Scottish Government did not set a date for the policy to lapse, but said it due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
* Wales: Ask your MS to lobby Eluned Morgan MS, Minister for Health and Social Services. The approval in Wales was also tied to the 2020 Coronavirus Act, which expires on 30 March 2022.

We must make a final push to remove the horrific DIY abortions policy, before it harms more women and ends the lives of more babies.
