Veterans Day is too short, words too weak, to honor the sacrifices that
make possible our security and our freedom.

Those who have served our nation in uniform merit both our respect and our
support. We do our veterans no honor by letting them go without care, find
themselves without a place to work or to sleep, or fall by their own hand
at a rate roughly twice that of the civilian population.

[ [link removed] ]If we mean what we say on this day, we’ll prove it by our actions.
We’ll eliminate the backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs. We’ll
provide the finest treatment for both physical and mental health. And
we’ll help veterans secure the housing, education, and employment they
deserve.

“As we express our gratitude,” President Kennedy reminded us, “we must
never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to
live by them.”
