J.D. Scholten for Congress
John --

We are so lucky to live in a land of opportunity, where our freedoms of speech, press, and religion are ensured. As the Iowa state flag proudly states: "Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain."

We owe so much of this to the sacrifices of our nation's veterans, including the 4.7 million veterans living in rural America. From the foundation of our country to the present, men and women in uniform have put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we hold so deeply.

America's veterans deserve recognition, respect, and the benefits and services they've earned. But too often, they face communities that are ill-prepared and underfunded to meet their needs.

Iowa's 4th district has numerous VA facilities, both large and small — yet, it can be over an hour long drive to the closest VA clinic; not to mention the wait times, which can be egregiously long. We must ensure sufficient job training and educational opportunities for veterans as they transition back to civilian life. And we must ensure homeless veterans are given the dignity of a place to live safely and comfortably. Regardless of where veterans choose to live, we have a responsibility to repay our great debt of gratitude for their service by ensuring their health, well-being, and future success.

We can and must do more to ensure that veterans are successfully reintegrated back into civilian life. A "thank you for your service" isn't enough. We must acknowledge the full gravity of asking our friends and neighbors to put their lives on the line for our freedom, safety, and security, and make real strides in upholding our promises to them by investing in their well-being, their care, and their communities.

To the veterans in Iowa's 4th district, and all around the country, know that I have your back — today and every day.
