Dear John, Minnesota’s state legislative session begins tomorrow, Monday, January 31, at noon, and the need to strengthen our democracy with Ranked Choice Voting has never been more clear. Our politics are becoming increasingly and dangerously polarized, and we need to take action now to address it. We need an election process that ensures elected leaders are responsive to the majority of voters and that prevents third parties from acting as spoilers, and Ranked Choice Voting does just that.
Last session, Rep. Steve Elkins, along with 34 co-authors, introduced HF 89 in the Minnesota House, and Sen. Kent Eken introduced companion bill SF 218 with colleagues in the Senate. The bill would implement RCV in primary and general elections for state and federal offices and would allow local jurisdictions to adopt RCV if they choose.
Reps. Cedrick Frazier (HF 1375) and Esther Agbaje (HF 2567) introduced identical clone bills in the House, and Sens. Lindsey Port (SF 1651) and Mary Kunesh (SF 2159) did the same in the Senate. With a total of three bills in each chamber, RCV legislation has the most authors in the 2021 legislative session, demonstrating broad support for the measure. These bills carry forward to 2022 as part of the 2021-2022 legislative biennium.
We want to build on the momentum from last session, continue to grow the number of legislators supporting and championing RCV and advance the bill. You can help make that a reality by contacting your legislators and urging them to support RCV statewide. Not only will your outreach build support for our legislation, it will continue to build momentum for more pro-RCV candidates to run and win in the November 2022 elections, when every House and Senate seat is up for election.
Contacting your legislators will also help push back on any efforts in the state senate to ban RCV, an antidemocratic effort we fought last session and something we may unfortunately see again.
The hard work we accomplished in 2021 has prepared us to be ready for the start of the 2022 session – thank you!!! We have a real opportunity to advance RCV statewide.
With the opening day of session coming tomorrow, we want our legislators to make RCV a top priority, and YOU can do that by contacting your legislators TODAY.
Together, we can make RCV possible in Minnesota. Thank you for taking this urgent call to action!
Sincerely,
Jeanne Massey |
