Dear John,
One hundred years ago today, America and our allies around the world came together to celebrate the first Armistice Day, a day dedicated to the anniversary of the end of World War I. Since then, November 11 has evolved into Veterans Day--a day that holds a special place in the spirit of our nation-- to honor the many brave Americans who have served this country all around the world.
Communities across the country will come together today to honor these selfless women and men, and recognize the countless sacrifices they have made to protect our values and freedoms. Their perseverance and dedication to serving their fellow Americans sets a powerful example for all of us. On behalf of all Oregonians, I thank everyone who has worn the uniform, and their families for their service to our nation.
On his last Veterans Day, President Kennedy shared powerful words at Arlington Cemetery: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” My hope is that we may all remember our words of thanks today, and use them as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to taking care of our veterans, and cherishing the freedom and values they stood for.
All my best, Jeff
