Y'all --
One of the best ways we can honor our nation's veterans is to reflect on the very real cost of war, and the responsibility we have to both our veterans and the next generation who will put on the uniform.
During my three tours in Afghanistan, I constantly came face-to-face with the realities of war. On my last tour, the Taliban opened fire on my helicopter. I was shot, and my aircraft went down. When rescue helicopters arrived, I strapped myself to the skids and opened fire on the Taliban fighters rushing the crash site below.
I made it out that day, but so many others -- friends of mine, those I served with -- have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country. To acknowledge the real, human cost of war, and reserve the deployment of our troops only as a last resort, is to honor the sacrifices that military members and their families make in serving our country.
Our service members deserve our support as they return from serving our country. I know first-hand what it's like to make the transition back to civilian life, and I will always seek to make good on our promise to our service members by ensuring they receive quality health care, housing assistance, and more.
I am acutely aware that we have a responsibility to the men and women putting on the uniform today to provide them with the most stable global environment possible as they enter into service. As your senator, this will be my priority.
Today, and every day, we can honor our veterans by ensuring that the policies we make in Washington reflect the sacrifices they make for us.
