Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced this week that he is retiring, and I’m grateful for his nearly three decades of fair and even-handed service on the Bench.

It’s also a reminder how high the stakes were in 2020, and what we overcame together. Thanks to the voters who secured our Democratic majority in the Senate, we can confirm a nominee on a simple majority vote.

Now, as we look to the future of the Supreme Court, we have an opportunity to confirm a Justice that not only reflects the diversity of our country, but will be a fierce defender of the Constitution, including protecting voting rights and reproductive rights — but we must move quickly.
