Press Release

11 November 2019

Muslim institutions across the UK are being urged to tackle poverty by becoming accredited Living Wage employers as part of Living Wage Week 11-17 November.

The call is led by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the country’s largest and most diverse national Muslim umbrella body, who have themselves become an accredited Living Wage Employer for the first time.

The Living Wage campaign is an independent movement of businesses and organisations who choose to voluntarily pay their employees a wage which is enough to live on, not just the government minimum, thereby helping to lift the poorest working families in society out of poverty.

Some of MCB’s affiliates are already accredited Living Wage Employers, including the Muslim Youth Helpline and Cheadle Mosque Association. And many more Muslim employers could also be pledging their support too, with the MCB’s report The Muslim Pound finding that in London alone, there are over 13,400 Muslim-owned businesses employing more than 70,000 people.

Harun Khan, MCB Secretary General said:

“As Muslims it is our duty to pay a fair and decent wage to those who we employ. Whether you are a mosque committee with a small team of staff, to a growing SME business owner, to a large charity with multiple offices across the country, I encourage you show your support to tackling poverty by becoming an accredited Living Wage employer today.”

You can become an accredited Living Wage employer is 3 easy steps:

  1. Ensure you pay the real living wage to all your directly employed staff
  2. Have a plan to pay any contractors you employ the living wage
  3. Register online at: https://www.livingwage.org.uk/become-a-living-wage-employer

This week, the MCB will also be writing to its affiliates who are large employers inviting them to become accredited Living Wage Employers.
