One of my favorite expressions is, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” The “main thing” for the No Labels community is to change the incentives in our political-media culture so that two-party solutions in Washington are the rule and not hard-sought exceptions. Two pieces of important legislation are working their way through the process now – and we all need to show support for the members of Congress in both parties who are pushing to turn bills into laws. In both cases – on reforming our election laws to restore confidence in the voting process, and on competing with China economically – our allies are following the blueprint successfully used to pass the infrastructure law. That means negotiations starting with a blank sheet of paper that gets filled in with input from senators and House members of both parties. On the China bill, the Senate passed its version with strong bipartisan support a few months ago. The Democratic leadership in the House went in a different direction this week, releasing a much different version with no input from Republicans. This is a classic example of what is wrong with Washington. Everyone agrees we need to do more to compete with China, including right now on the production of semiconductors. We don’t have a month to waste. And yet House Democrats took a step this week that, at best, will delay the process. Let’s all do whatever we can to urge Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic leadership to move towards voting on a version of the China bill that can actually get signed into law ASAP. On the election reform efforts, a bigger and bigger bipartisan coalition of senators is working hard on a package that would be great for the country, a practical, two-party solution on which both sides negotiate in good faith to find common ground. |
