WE WON A KALEIDOSCOPE AWARD!
We are so grateful to the University of San Diego and the School of Leadership and Education Sciences for choosing Border Angels as the 2022 winners of the Kaleidoscope Award for Good Governance Small Organization category. We want to thank USD, our fellow recognized organizations, our incredible board, our staff, our volunteers, our supporters, and everyone who helps us continue our mission of love!

If there was ever a year where nonprofit governance mattered, 2021 was it. Our communities relied upon local nonprofits like ours more than ever for critical services, many of which faced episodic stay-at-home orders, revenue losses, and staff furloughs or layoffs. Nonprofit boards were called upon to lean into their roles in helping to fundraise, develop new strategies for meeting community needs at a time of crisis, and think outside the box in ways to achieve a greater social good.

Today we want to introduce you to our 101st bond recipient through our Familias Reunidas Program: Andres. He is an asylum seeker from Colombia who spent 5 months at the Imperial Regional Detention Center. He asked us to share the following message:

"Good morning my name is Andres, I am one more immigrant that has come to this country. I arrived July 26th, 2021, and I wanted to thank Border Angels for what they were able to do for me, as I would not have been freed without their assistance. The bond that was asked of me was very high and they were the only ones who were able to help and hold out their hand to get me out of their [detention] by paying the bond. I want to thank them for everything they are doing for us and thank all of you I am here today, living a normal and calm life, and being able to fight for my asylum case. Thank you so much for what you did for me, what I know you will do for hundreds of others because without your help it would not be possible to start this new life. Thank you to Border Angels from the bottom of my heart I thank you, I hope God blesses you always for everything you do for others. Thank you!"

We have a new permanent resident! Clarissa was in removal proceedings, but thanks to your support we were able to terminate her case and stop her deportation. With her new status, she will also be able to become a U.S. citizen in 5 years. We are so grateful to our program lawyers for this accomplishment.

Our team's first Water Drop of the new year. As we recently learned of FY 2021 being the deadliest year (on record) for the U.S./Mexico border, we hold that information with us as we navigated into the new calendar year, and will continue to do so week after week.

A new year also means new goals. There's always a drive to do more than ever before, however, strategy can be more effective. Where we leave supplies can be more important than the total number of supplies we leave. Taking care of the environment is always a priority, and we aim to remove more trash from the desert than ever before in 2022.
We have shared before and after from that Saturday's cleanup of a heavily damaged section of the desert from recreational shooting. In total, we removed 296 pounds of trash.

Until further notice, we are still not taking any new volunteers. Click here to donate ([link removed]) 💧

Construction continues as the final touches go into the Latinas Musulmanas Shelter in Tijuana. We are honored and excited to be the first non-Muslim organization supporting a Muslim shelter and human rights group. We thank you for your continued support of our Shelter Aid Program which aides efforts like this one, and will help refugee Afghan families arriving at our southern border.

THE LATEST AT EL CHAPARRAL ENCAMPMENT

We are coming up on almost one year of the establishment of the "Esperanza" encampment at El Chaparral at the Tijuana port of entry. We're saddened to admit that our migrant siblings remain in limbo, and with Migrant Protection Protocols in place once again.

The migrants calculate that there are now about 300 people left there, and other families who have not been allowed to enter the camp are camping in the little park in front. The encampment is under the control of state police, and all migrants residing there have undergone an identification process as a condition to remain there.

We continue to plea the Biden administration to remember that these are real people, families, children who are forced to live on the street. Completely neglected and denied the legal pathways of asylum. We urge them once again to administer the power they have to WELCOME instead of closing the doors to and ABANDONING asylum seekers.

Chula Vista Lawyer Has Released 101 Migrants From Otay Detention Center On Bail

Through a program in which the community provides donations to raise funds for bonds, attorney Dulce Garcia has released 101 migrants in less than a year to continue their cases on probation, usually in the homes of their relatives in the United States.

“The two most recent cases were a Colombian woman and a man, unrelated cases, who were released on bail on Christmas Eve,” as an unexpected Christmas gift for both migrants and their families,”Garcia told Chula Vista Today.
