The past month across Canada, everyone witnessed through a number of incidents covered by the media just how real and unprecedented the discrimination towards trans, non-binary, gender diverse and Two Spirit people truly is.

We saw a Toronto Public Library allow hate speech towards the trans community and specifically trans women. The same speaker, Megan Murphy, was also recently allowed to speak at a Vancouver library. We saw the Manitoba provincial government deny a non-binary person the right to have an X marker as the gender on their identification. On top of that, we also saw a major public debate around the inclusion of gender identity and sexual orientation as rights in the code of conduct at the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

We are so proud of our community who has shown up and stood by each other through each of these issues. These widely publicized issues are merely a drop in the bucket when it comes to the daily discrimination faced by trans, non-binary, gender diverse and Two Spirit people. Based on statistics from stats Canada, we know that hate crime is on the rise and so now more than ever, we need to stand together and protect the most venerable of our community.

We are looking forward to the upcoming inaugural Canadian Trans Summit, for which Egale is the fiscal sponsor. The summit is the first of it's kind and will bring together committed trans, gender diverse, and Two-Spirit community members from across the country to discuss strategic collaboration in pursuit of trans rights throughout Canada.

Sincerely,

Helen Kennedy
Executive Director, Egale Canada

Tania and Dana’s Wedding

Tania and Dana approached Egale earlier in the year to learn more about Egale as an organization – and we were thrilled when they later chose us to be one of their “charities of choice” for guests who wanted to make donations in honour of their nuptials. They wrote they decided to support Egale because of our strong advocacy work, in addition to our work supporting LGBTQI2S youth.

They have provided their wedding photos for the Egale community to share their pride - they had a "Queer the North" bunting hanging around (a play on words from the Raptors "We the North") and they had a Queer the North flag made as well! Their tables were named after activists, including LGBTQI2S advocates, and in their ceremony and thank you speech they referenced those who fought to make their special day possible.

Canadian 2SLGBTQ Housing Survey

Dear LGBTQ2S+ Community Members and Housing Providers,
We invite you to complete a very important online survey about the housing needs of LGBTQ2S+ Canadians. This anonymous survey is part of a one-year Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded study on meeting the housing needs of LGBTQ2S+ Canadians.  This research has been approved by the Dalhousie University Research Ethics Boards. The findings from this survey will help advance our understanding of how to meet the unique housing needs of our LGBTQ2S+ populations and will also be used to develop a 5-year SSHRC grant to implement the findings.
