One thing Pramila has been working on since coming to Congress is cutting the excessive, bloated military budget.
Military spending has gotten completely out of control, and it only benefits weapons manufacturers and defense contractors. Last year, Congress even increased defense spending to an amount more than Donald Trump’s last military budget. That is completely upside down.
Last week, Pramila introduced a resolution in the House to cut military waste, stop selling weapons to international human rights abusers, and focus our foreign policy on diplomacy instead of a constant over-reliance on military force.
Our country must redefine and reimagine what it means to be strong. Being strong is NOT giving more money to a bloated Pentagon budget that is already larger than the following 11 countries’ military budgets combined. That’s why Pramila has championed a 10% cut to military spending and voted NO on last year’s defense budget.
We can strengthen our country by focusing foreign policy on peacebuilding and use a slashed military budget to put money towards guaranteeing health care for all, raising wages, investing in child care and education, fighting for our unions and labor protections, and so much more.
The resolution is wide-ranging, recognizing the global security challenges of a new nuclear arms race and instability from climate disasters. It aims to stem violent conflict spurred by U.S. military intervention and weapons sales to oppressive regimes.
Our fight for peace and transformative change is only as powerful as our grassroots movement. And we need to let Congress know there’s a wave of support behind cutting a bloated Pentagon budget and focusing on international diplomacy. Sign on now to be a citizen co-sponsor of Pramila's resolution to change the way we approach foreign policy and end excessive military spending.
In solidarity,
Team Jayapal
