Addressing the U.S. Conference of Mayors last week, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urged local law enforcement agencies to work in tandem with ICE to target and deport undocumented people.
Secretary Mayorkas’ remarks are yet another example of the Biden administration’s continued betrayal of campaign promises to protect our communities and end Trump-era immigration policies.

President Biden has more than 1.8 million deportations and expulsions on his hands after one year in office.
The Trump-relic ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy was expanded under the new administration, targeting Black and brown asylum seekers at the Mexico border.
And now to kick off 2022, Biden’s DHS is ramping up efforts to criminalize undocumented communities and further merge the U.S. mass incarceration system with the immigration detention and deportation machine.
Biden ran on a promise to undo the 287(g) programs initiated under Trump that disproportionately profile, target, and criminalize Black and brown people. Not only has the administration let Trump’s cruel and inhumane legacy live on, but they are actively making it even more harmful.
