Hello People For Member, --
I’m writing you today to lay out our plans for this year – and [ [link removed] ]ask for
your financial support to help execute them.
You’ve probably noticed the disturbing trend toward authoritarianism on
the Far Right these days. Still clinging to the Big Lie, they’re
increasingly turning to voter suppression, misinformation, election
subversion and even violence (such as the January 6 coup attempt) in order
to cling to power. This movement betrays the founding principles of our
American democracy and, if left unchecked, represents a grave threat to
the fundamental idea of government of, by, and for the people.
People For the American Way has been in this fight a long time – 41 years,
to be precise – and we know how to take on, expose, and disrupt the Far
Right. We’re ready for what’s already become one of the most consequential
years in our organization’s history ... but as a grassroots-funded
organization, we need your help.
[ [link removed] ]So we’re asking you to chip in a renewal donation today to help defend
the American Way.
Here’s
the 2022 work we’re asking you to support with your contributions.
1. We need to defend and expand our majorities in the U.S. House and
Senate. We all know that extremists like Paul Gosar and Marjorie
Taylor Greene are unfit to serve in Congress, let alone lead
committees with a Republican majority in the House. And with more
Democrats in the Senate, we’ll finally be able to pass widely popular
legislation such as the Freedom to Vote: John R Lewis Act and the
Build Back Better Act.
2. We’re going to keep fighting at ALL levels for voting rights. The
recent failure of the Senate to pass voting rights legislation was a
tough loss, but in no way represents the end of our movement. We're
going to continue pushing for democracy-strengthening reforms, such as
state laws expanding voter access and, where appropriate, passage of
the National Popular Vote interstate compact.
3. We'll continue the push to maintain fair and independent courts. Four
years' worth of Trumpist-Right partisan cronies – many of them
amenable to voter suppression schemes and challenges to legitimate
election results – have taken seats on our federal courts. President
Biden has so far made remarkable progress in mitigating this trend,
with an unprecedented number of diverse judges confirmed for this
point in his term ... but this progress simply must continue. And now
we will have a historic opportunity to confirm to a lifetime seat on
the Supreme Court an eminently qualified nominee, committed to
equality and justice for all, who will bring her unique perspective as
a Black woman to the bench.
We’re focusing on these specific areas because they’re the
exact intersection of our strength and experience as an advocacy
organization, and what’s needed in the coming months to protect our
democracy from the totalitarian threat posed by today’s Far Right.
[ [link removed] ]So I hope you'll step up with a renewal donation today.
Thanks so much,
– Ben Jealous, President

. But know that if you leave, it will be harder for you to stay involved with People For the American Way and continue our
crucial work. PFAW is able to win policy battles and elections, and
counter the Right's extremism and hate, because of dedicated
activists like you, and we're always eager to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for your support.
