Changes to the Highway Code

Changes to the Highway Code will take effect from tomorrow, Saturday 29 January, to make roads safer for the most vulnerable users. These include a new road user hierarchy, and alterations to pedestrian and road user priority at crossings:

  • priority for pedestrians waiting to cross at junctions
  • priority for cyclists and horses travelling straight ahead at junctions
  • confirmation that cyclists should take safer primary position.

The official updates can be found here.

Staying safe

Government guidance on face coverings changed on Thursday 27 January, however we advise that you continue to wear face coverings (unless exempt) on public transport and in other indoor spaces. If you need to travel, follow the safer travel guidance.

Rail services 🚆

EMR: Due to increased staff absence and reduced customer demand, some small timetable reductions are in place. Online journey planners will be updated on a weekly basis. Check EMR's webpage here.

CrossCountry: Due to train crew availability, there will be disruption to services until further notice. Check CrossCountry's website for the latest information.

Please check with your local operator before travelling for the latest information.

All operators in the city continue to clean vehicles thoroughly on a regular basis, and windows on buses will be kept open for ventilation.

  • Use contactless payment methods where possible
  • Keep wearing a face covering
  • Carry hand sanitizer with you to use regularly
  • Plan ahead - avoid peak hours and routes
