Supreme Court Will Hear Cases That Could End Affirmative Action in College Admissions

By: Bruce Hausknecht

Parents interested in their children’s future enrollment in the college of their choice will be following the latest cases that have arrived at the U.S. Supreme Court. A group of Asian-Americans has challenged Harvard University’s program of affirmative action that has penalized applicants of Asian descent in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A companion case against the University of North Carolina (UNC) alleges that similar wrongs being committed by that public institution violate the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection.

Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) is asking the high court in both cases to overrule its 2003 affirmative action decision in Grutter v. Bollinger. The court has accepted both cases and consolidated them for purposes of oral argument at a future date.

Biological Male UPenn Athlete Wins Women’s Swimming Events – Again

By: Jeff Johnston

Lia Thomas, the collegiate swimmer who believes he is a woman, won two more races for the University of Pennsylvania in a dual meet against Harvard on Saturday, January 22. Harvard won the women’s dual 187-113.

Thomas, who has male DNA, was born male, went through male puberty and has a male body, won both the women’s 100- and 200-yard freestyle races. CNN wrote about the event, saying, “Now Thomas is being hailed as one of the best women’s collegiate swimmers in the country, with her rapid success prompting both praise and criticism in the swimming world.”

NBC Out reported, “Ivy League swimming champion becomes target of transphobic rhetoric,” explaining that “transgender” activists were upset with some of the media coverage of Thomas. The story pointed to outlets that used male pronouns or showed pictures of Thomas when he participated on UPenn’s men’s swim team, before starting testosterone suppression and taking estrogen in 2019 and shifting to the women’s team last year.

NBC Out said: “Transgender advocates have condemned that coverage and some of the conversation about Thomas as transphobic. They said it mischaracterizes her victories to make it appear that transgender women are cheating just by being trans and implies that one trans woman winning means trans women generally are dominating women’s sports.”

New Pro-Life Legislation Announced in South Dakota

By: Nicole Hunt

South Dakota is the most recent state to propose legislation to protect the lives of preborn babies. On Friday, January 21, 2022, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem announced the language of two new pro-life bills. One proposed measure would ban abortions once a heartbeat is detected in the womb. The second measure would ban telemedicine abortions. The proposed legislation was announced as pro-life advocates took to the streets in Washington, D.C., at the March for Life.

In a press release concerning the proposed legislative measures, the governor said, “Every human life is unique and beautiful from the moment it is conceived. Every life is worthy of our protection, worthy of the right to live. We hope that this year’s March for Life will be the last and that the Supreme Court will finally protect every unborn life. But until that comes to pass, these bills will ensure that both unborn children and their mothers are protected in South Dakota.”

The first draft bill, the heartbeat legislation, would ban abortion once a child’s heartbeat is detected in the womb, which happens around the 5th week of pregnancy. This measure creates a legal definition of pregnancy as beginning at fertilization. It also mirrors the Texas heartbeat law as it creates a private cause of action for individuals to sue abortion providers. Like the Texas bill, individuals who successfully sue abortion providers would be entitled to a $10,000 reward from the provider.

5 Slogans the NFL Should Put on Helmets for AFC/NFC Championships and the Super Bowl

By: Paul Batura

With all four of the NFL divisional playoff games coming down to the final snap and one ending with a touchdown in overtime, football fans would be hard pressed to find a more exciting weekend of gridiron action than this past Saturday and Sunday.

However, the NFL’s penchant for leveraging racial strife, along with it adopting other “woke” policies, has turned off a lot of fans this past year, including me. In fact, I may have watched as much professional football this past weekend as I did all season.

But in the midst of dipping in and out of all four games, two of our boys noticed the social justice messages on the back of players’ helmets – the result of a decision last year to “show solidarity” with those protesting, among other things, the death of George Floyd.

“Stop hate?” our 11-year-old asked, pointing to a close-up shot of a Kansas City Chief’s helmet. “Who’s hating who? Who supports hating?”

It’s a fair question.

Other slogans on NFL helmets include, “End Racism,” “It Takes All of Us,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Inspire Change,” and “Say Their Stories.”

School Choice Resolution Introduced in U.S. Senate

By: Zachary Mettler

Senator James Lankford has introduced a resolution advocating for school choice along with several other senators, just in time for National School Choice Week.

The resolution recognizes “the necessity of school choice as a tool to empower all parents with the freedom to choose the best educational environment for their children and to combat destructive ideologies like Critical Race Theory promoted by many public schools.”

“The idea that any race, ethnicity, color, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior should not be forced into any required curriculum,” the resolution states.

“Parents should have the ability to choose a school for their child based on their child’s individual needs, academic goals, and personal and religious beliefs.”

It also acknowledges the concerns that many parents have about the negative impacts of remote learning and mask mandates, as well as COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

For example, Los Angeles Unified School District, with over 600,000 students, is the 2nd largest school district and is in the process of implementing a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all schoolchildren age 12 and older.
