“Why are you in this fight?”
A few months ago, we started asking new members of the Stand Up America community to answer this question and to tell us a little more about themselves.
It’s an understatement to say we’ve been touched and inspired by the responses we’ve gotten. We’ve heard from people across America, from people who are brand new to their activism to people getting reinspired to get back in the fight.
After last week’s disappointing vote in the Senate, when Congress failed to protect voting rights, it’s important to remember the reasons why we’re fighting for our democracy—even when the going gets tough.
So, what motivates you? Let us know in our survey. It won’t take long.

We’ve also asked a few members of the Stand Up America team to answer the same question: why are you in this fight? Read their responses below:
WHY I'M IN THIS FIGHT
Anushka
Press Secretary & Deputy Communications Director
My reason for joining the movement to protect our democracy is simple: it's my duty. I am the proud daughter of a line long of activists and community leaders, who have fought for poor, disenfranchised, and marginalized people—I see it as my calling in life to continue that work.
As a strong supporter of unions and building power among working class Black and brown people in the U.S., I know that strengthening democracy and shifting political power to the 99% go hand-in-hand.
Aubrey
Digital Organizer
I do this work to empower those who have been forced to live closer and closer to the edge because their voices often go ignored in politics. I've seen how detrimental things like sudden emergencies and medical debt can be to people's lives. You shouldn't have to be lucky in order to live without the worry that a medical bill will put you out of house and home or that you’ll need to ration this month’s prescription due to cost.
By allowing marginalized people a greater voice in our political system, we can build a society that is more just and supportive of everyone. I want to help build a democracy that is more responsive to the needs of working people, not just the wealthy.
Colton
Creative Director
I grew up in a small, conservative town in Virginia, where I always felt like an outlier. I told others that I didn't like to speak about politics or social issues, but the truth was I had hated those conversations because they made me feel different from everyone in my community—which I already felt being one of the openly gay students at my high school.
As I got older, I realized that I didn’t need to always stand on the sidelines. When I get frustrated with how slow things change, I always think about how much my hometown has transformed and become more open and progressive over the last ten years. I'm passionate about further empowering the people of Virginia by protecting their right to vote and strengthening democracy in the state.
WHY ARE YOU IN THIS FIGHT?
Feeling motivated by Anushka, Aubrey, and Colton? We want to hear from you too about why you’re in this fight!
Reminding ourselves of what’s at stake and what matters to us is the fuel in our tank that will keep us going, and we’re going to need that in the months and years to come.
Take a few minutes to tell us more about what motivates you to build a more representative democracy.
