Twelve years ago last week an ultra-conservative majority on the Court stepped up its attacks on our democracy with their ruling in the case Citizens United v. FEC. That decision opened the floodgates to huge sums of outside money, including dark, undisclosed money in our elections. Trump’s wildly irresponsible charge was tailor-made to promote racial resentment and stoke the kind of anger and grievance that is fomented by white nationalists and has already led to violence and mass murder.
