Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer plans to retire in June.
Dear AU Supporter,
The last three appointments to the Supreme Court—all Donald Trump’s—secured a solid majority that is skeptical of, if not outright hostile to, church-state separation. This is the moment to put a stop to this steady dismantling of a core American principle that protects religious freedom for all of us.

Just last week, Justice Gorsuch demonstrated the threats we face, referencing the “so-called” separation of church and state. There’s nothing “so-called” about a fundamental First Amendment right.
The Supreme Court should be a critical line of defense to protect the freedom and equality of every American. We deserve a Justice who will defend our country’s foundational promise of separation of religion and government like our democracy depends on it—because it does. Americans United is on the front lines of this fight. This year alone, the Supreme Court will be deciding at least five cases that could have dire consequences for church-state separation. This is a generational moment to prevent the Court’s conservative majority from redefining religious freedom as a sword to harm others. It’s past time to begin rebuilding a majority on the Court that will ensure religious freedom remains a shield that protects all of us, as it was intended to be.
We need you with us now more than ever.
