Houston DSA’s monthly general meetings are where the membership comes together to be in community, discuss the activities going on within our own chapter and the national DSA, and conduct chapter business like elections, votes, or resolutions. Please RSVP here!
General meetings are open to non-members, though participation in certain activities like elections and votes is reserved for Houston DSA members only (you can join here).
We work to make our meetings as accessible as possible to everyone. For parents, we offer child watch through our Socialist Sprouts program. If you need someone to watch your potty-trained and vaccinated child, let us know!
To get to the meeting via Houston METRO: Rt. 40 – Telephone Rd. @ Oakliff St. (Stop #1656, 1652) Rt. 28 – S. Wayside Dr. @ Telephone Rd. (Stop #3541, 1651)
Email [email protected] for carpool information or if you have any other needs we can work to accommodate.

Our next Reading Group is tomorrow, November 11, 7PM at Bohemeo's. We will cover Stafford Beer's "Designing Freedom". This selection is six 30 minutes radio lectures Beer gave in 1973 after a managing the development of Project Cybersyn for Democratic Socialist President Salvador Allende in Chile in the early seventies. The lectures can be found here.
We recently talked about Beer in our discussion on "The People's Republic of Walmart," and while it's not necessary that you have read that, Beer's lectures will give us an opportunity to dive a little deeper into the work it will take running a planned socialist society. There's a big gap between "The Revolution" and Fully Automated Luxury Communism, and its time we thought about how to get from our capitalist hellscape to the rose emoji future.
The lectures were also collected into the book as "Designing Freedom" with added illustrations well worth checking out, a PDF of which is available here. Of course, the book is also available for purchase online from various sources.
The Houston DSA Reading Group is open to members and non-members alike and aims to be accessible to all attendees regardless of background knowledge or expertise. We hope to see you there!

On Tuesday our Housing and Tenant's Rights group met and discussed a plethora of issues surrounding housing in Houston. They talked about some recent successes within the Houston Tenants' Union, and some opportunities to help them out coming soon. Later, they talked about the state of flood management in the city, which is not where we'd like it to be. This is an ongoing discussion with lots of nuance and paths forward, so it's important that we have a place to discuss this. Finally, they talked about the Food Not Bombs supply drive, for which they will be collecting supplies to help Houston's unhoused population as the weather chills. This includes warm clothes, hand warmers, sleeping bags, and blankets. They plan on collecting supplies at the general meeting, as well as December's Housing and Tenants' Rights meeting and general. If any of these issues, or anything else around housing, sound interesting to you, make sure to come out to their next meeting December 3!
