Hey Friend,
I just read an article about moms meeting up in Boston to rage scream together in utter anger and frustration at the continued lack of support for families, especially moms, while the pandemic continues to ravage child care and any semblance of stability. [1]
It’s me. I am these moms.
Except I have a very specific target for my volcanic rage. I’ll just say it: The f-ing holdouts in the U.S. Senate: i.e. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin and the entirety of all Republican Senators who so far have refused to pass Build Back Better.
Like Michelle Kobler suggests in her recent McSweeny’s satirical article where she talks about a boat in a shark infested circle as a child care solution, I’m starting to consider a boat surrounded by sharks as a serious solution. But instead of it being a child care solution, maybe we can put the elected leaders who are holdouts on the Build Back Better agenda on that boat in the middle of shark infested waters while Baby Shark plays on repeat – and tell them to pass solutions ASAP if they want to get off the boat…[2]
That’s where I’m at, y’all. For two years, parents across the nation have felt like hostages trying to survive the daily changes and challenges of living in this pandemic. Continued child care closures. Layoffs because of no child care. Now how do I pay my heating bill? How do we recover from COVID if we get it with no paid time off? What happens if my mom gets sick in her nursing home? And, we can’t forget, how much screen time can I really get away with before I have a zombie kid on my hands as I try to just get a minute to figure SOMETHING out?
Where is the love for our kids, families, and moms?
(We’ll share highlights from the rage line with the holdouts in the Senate to help get them moving and share some to the public too. Our outside voices, together, will send a powerful message that will be heard across the nation.)
The thing is that we didn’t have to get to this point.
In fact, the U.S. House already passed the Build Back Better Act. But then, just this last December, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin and the entirety of all Republican Senators refused to pass Build Back Better. That’s right. NOT ONE SINGLE freaking Republican Senator wants to pass life saving measures for families like extending the Child Tax Credit payments, solving the child care crisis, guaranteeing paid family and medical leave when your family needs it, making home-and community-based services for the elderly and those with disabilities more affordable, lowering the cost of insulin and other prescription drugs, and more.
They are playing politics with good policy while families struggle to survive the new daily realities. They are playing games with our lives.
And their political games are taking a toll.
In a recent article talking about the strain parents are feeling, Melinda Wenner Moyer cites a nationwide survey that so far has found that 70% of moms are feeling overwhelmed and stressed, about half of parents are feeling depressed and hopeless, and that fewer than 15% of moms are getting enough sleep. [3]
We are not okay, but we can be if elected leaders do right by us. That’s why after you share on the rage line, we’ll share your words with the Senate holdouts to push them to get moving now.
We know things are hard. We feel you. We see you. And it’s not okay.
That’s why we’re marching, primal screaming, calling, writing, and using our biggest outside voices (even the potty mouth voices when the kids aren’t in the room!) to help pass Build Back Better.
Together, we can have each other's backs and tell the Senate it’s time they had our backs too.
