Friend --
Today, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced that he will be stepping down after more than 27 years serving the American people on the highest court in the land. His stewardship of the Court was cirtical to maintaining the integrity, transparency, and impartiality that we depend on when faced with incredibly complex and difficult legal decisions of huge importance - and Justice Breyer time and time again stood up for what was right.
His work and service are a legacy that President Biden promised to continue today when announcing that he will appoint a woman of color to replace Justice Breyer. This is an appointment that is long overdue, an opportunity to make history and right wrongs, and one which many - including myself - were overjoyed to hear.
This nomination is important because it offers the opportunity for a Supreme Court Justice who not only has experience, integrity, and character, but who will do everything to defend the freedom to vote, the right to choose, the integrity of our Democracy, the environment we depend on, and the rights we take for granted.
But one new justice isn't enough. Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump hijacked the Supreme Court in 2016 and turned it into a far-right majority branch committed to overturning Roe v. Wade, dismantling voting rights, and even rejecting a common-sense vaccine mandate.
We need to fight fire with fire and expand the court!
So please, join me in reveling in the news of the upcoming nomination of the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. And then take action, by signing my petition to demand that President Biden restore balance to the Supreme Court by expanding the number of justices.
Thank you for your support. Always in your service,
