Folks,
After North Carolina voters filed a challenge to Madison Cawthorn’s eligibility to serve in Congress because of his involvement in the January 6th insurrection, his legal team is citing the 1872 Confederate Amnesty Act to defend his actions and try to protect his seat.
To break this down, this was an act of Congress that was passed to allow Confederate soldiers and politicians guilty of engaging in an insurrection or rebellion to become members of Congress. Let that sink in for a moment.
Despite how outrageous this sounds, Cawthorn’s use of this defense must be taken seriously. With this legal defense, Cawthorn is placing himself in a legal class alongside former Confederate rebels in order to try to hold onto his seat in Congress.
This is yet more evidence of Cawthorn’s disregard for the laws and institutions of our democracy. Cawthorn is not fit to serve in office and must be held accountable.
While this legal battle is ongoing, we can’t wait around for Cawthorn to be removed. We must be organizing every day to win this seat and replace him.
Will you donate $25 or more today towards our end-of-month goal so we can help make Madison Cawthorn a one-term Congressman once and for all?
