John,
Did you know that residents of Washington, DC don’t have a vote on the decisions being made in Congress?
The more than 670,000 U.S. citizens who live in the District of Columbia serve on juries and in the military, pay more federal taxes than residents in 22 other states, and yet are denied representation.
It’s time for residents of Washington, DC―who are majority Black, brown, Asian, and members of frontline communities―to have their voices heard. Sign the petition: No taxation without representation. DC Statehood now!

DC is a historically Black city and Black Americans still make up 46% of the population. The campaign against DC statehood has been a ferocious attempt to disenfranchise the Black vote and it’s worked for decades.
It’s the ultimate form of voter suppression.
Additionally, the District of Columbia must seek congressional approval for everything from funding for the city's schools to infrastructure and road repairs. Congress can even veto DC laws―no matter how big the margin of victory at the ballot box.
Denying DC residents voting representation in Congress and budgetary control over their own communities is the ultimate form of voter suppression.
Will you join the Coalition on Human Needs and our national allies in calling for DC Statehood now?
Statehood is the only way to guarantee equality at the ballot box for the more than 670,000 Americans who live in our nation’s capital city.
Thank you for taking action today,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
