Follow on Social ‌ ‌ ‌ President's Message It's almost February, and as we turn the page on the calendar, this is the time to educate your students and their families about National Children's Dental Health Month. It is estimated that 51 million school hours are lost due to oral health issues. Oral health concerns are the most chronic disease concerns in school-aged children. Schools and school nurses can play a major role in enhancing students’ and families’ oral health. School nurses coordinate oral health education for students, parents, and school staff. They are a resource for teachers for oral health curricula. School nurses conduct or facilitate oral health screenings and dental caries prevention programs. School nurses also assist families in locating and accessing treatment for oral health disease or dental injuries. Check out NASN's resources to spread the word. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights Youth's Overdose Death Renews Pleas for Narcan in Schools NASN has advocated for naloxone to be in all schools since 2015 and for school nurses to help educate their communities about the signs and symptoms of substance abuse. “It's a very unfortunate outcome," Linda Mendonca, the association's president, said about the Hartford student's death. “It brings us back to school preparedness and response plans. Having those in place is really critical." NASN created a Naloxone in Schools Toolkit for school nurses that includes information on administering naloxone and educating the community about opioid problems. The kit has been downloaded from its website more than 49,000 times. VIEW ARTICLE Paid advertisement National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing According to the findings of a new, national survey by the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, nearly half of more than 5,600 nurse respondents reported that there is widespread racism in nursing. The Code of Ethics for Nurses obligates nurses to be allies and to advocate for and speak up against racism, discrimination, and injustice. The Commission urges all nurses across every health care setting and environment to join them in boldly confronting individual and systemic racism. LISTEN TO PODCAST COVID-19 Updates Free At-Home COVID-19 Tests Every home in the United States is eligible to order four free at-home COVID-⁠19 rapid antigen tests. Orders will usually ship in 7-12 days. These tests give results within 30 minutes (no lab drop-off required). You can pass this information along to the families in your schools. COVID Testing in K-12: A “How To” Webinar Join the U.S. Department of Education for a webinar to help schools and districts start or strengthen their school-based Covid-19 testing program, with participants including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), The Rockefeller Foundation, and others. This webinar will be offered on Friday, January 28 and February 4 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. EST. There is an optional Q&A session for 20 minutes afterward for those with additional questions.
