THE WEEK'S BIG 3

Nearly 100 candidates for political office and politicians across the country are increasingly embracing extremist talking points, endorsing hateful campaigns and promoting conspiracy theories, according to a new report from ADL. A Tennessee school board voted to remove "Maus," a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust, from the district's curriculum after officials objected to instances of profanity and an image of a nude woman. A white supremacist group is alleged to have been behind hundreds of antisemitic fliers -- falsely claiming the public health response to Covid-19 is “orchestrated” by Jewish people -- distributed in neighborhoods in at least six states.

Read on for more on these headlines, news you can use to fight hate and the latest info about ADL from around the country.

'Maus,' Pulitzer Prize-Winning Book About Holocaust, is Pulled from Tennessee School District

“The McMinn County Board of Education's Jan. 10 vote to remove the novel, published by cartoonist Art Spiegelman about his Jewish parents' experiences in Nazi concentration camps, was 10-0, according to meeting minutes. The district had sought to use the novel, first serialized in 1980 and later published in two volumes, as an ‘anchor text’ for eighth graders studying the Holocaust.” NBC News:

Antisemitic Flyers Distributed in Neighborhoods Across the Country
“Though the fliers appeared on opposite sides of the country, they all began with the statement that ‘every single aspect of the COVID agenda is Jewish,’ according to news reports. They also list several officials, such as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the head of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, that the unknown writers of the flyer claim are part of the so-called ‘COVID agenda.’” Newsweek:

On the eve of #HolocaustRemembranceDay, it's appalling to see Tucker Carlson & FOX invoke the kind of antisemitic tropes typically found in white supremacist media. There’s no excuse for this kind of fear mongering, especially in light of intensifying #antisemitism…
