John, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring at the end of the Court's term. 😲
This is a huge — no, GIGANTIC — opportunity for President Biden to immediately nominate a bold justice committed to racial, environmental, social, and economic justice and deliver on his promise to put the first Black woman on the Supreme Court.
Some Senate Democrats are already suggesting we don't need to rush the process. That's wrong. Leaving this Supreme Court seat up to Democrats' chances in the midterm elections is dangerous and would threaten reproductive justice, immigrants, a stable climate, and the future of our generation.
Let's be clear: our fight cannot end with this nomination. The makeup of the SCOTUS has to reflect the nation if we're going to advance our laws at the same pace as our society changes. And the only way we can break the conservative majority is by expanding the damn court.
With our lives on the line, Biden must nominate a bold justice as soon as possible, specifically, the first Black woman on the Supreme Court like he promised on the campaign trail.
In solidarity,
All of us at Sunrise
