** Hydroelectric Development Violates Human Rights on Nepal’s Likhu River
------------------------------------------------------------

Near the Likhu River in eastern Nepal, Indigenous and local communities are adversely affected by hydroelectric power projects by the Kathmandu-based company MV Dugar Group. The projects have a total investment of 21 billion rupees from 18 different private limited banks but the affected communities continue to await remedy and justice. According to the communities, the projects were illegally conducted without addressing their demands and giving adequate compensation for the damage resulting in their construction. Read more. ** Inter-American Court of Human Rights Affirms Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Freedom of Expression in Guatemala

On December 17, 2021, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights announced its decision in the case Indigenous Maya Kaqchikel Peoples of Sumpango vs. Guatemala, declaring the Republic of Guatemala “internationally responsible for the violation of the rights to freedom of expression, equality before the law and participation in cultural life” of Indigenous Peoples. ** In Memoriam: 33 Indigenous Rights Defenders Murdered in 2021 in Latin America

Violence against Indigenous environmental and human rights defenders is rampant worldwide. As a result of structural violence against Indigenous Peoples, many crimes against them are not highly publicized. ** Cherokee Nation and Global Indigenous Languages Caucus Host International Decade of Indigenous Languages Launch Event

On January 5-7, 2022, the Launch Event for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages took place in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, hosted by the Cherokee Nation and the Global Indigenous Languages Caucus. ** Cultural Survival Outlines How Climate Change is Adversely Impacting Indigenous Peoples in Report to OHCHR

** Strengthening Indigenous Community Communication in Southeastern Mexico

In September 2021, thanks to the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Cultural Survival held two trainings focused on Indigenous community communications through a gender lens. These were the first two of a series of trainings designed for leaders from Indigenous organizations and radio stations in Southeastern Mexico. Bush Radio is a popular and pioneering community radio station in South Africa. The station broadcasts programs in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa from Salt River, Cape Town on 89.5 MHz FM, with a music and talk format aimed at the 18 to 39 age group. In this podcast, Bush FM discusses the resurgence of Khoi and San languages in Southern Africa.

Through their Guardian Youth Water Project, Honduras-based Indigenous organization Coordinadora Nacional Ancestral de Derechos Indígena Maya Ch’orti’ de Honduras (CONADIMCHH) sought to strengthen and empower Maya Ch’orti leaders through focusing on the spirituality of water.
