NEW RESEARCH SHOWS 55 PERCENT DECLINE OVER 70 YEARS FOR OP STEELHEAD
Wild steelhead populations in the Olympic Peninsula have declined by more than half since the 1950s . This alarming fact is one of the main findings of a new paper published in the North American Journal of Fisheries Management from Wild Salmon Center Science Director Matt Sloat and scientists with Trout Unlimited and NOAA’S Northwest Fisheries Science Center. The study authors also confirm that OP wild steelhead are returning to freshwater an average 1-2 months later than they did 70 years ago .

REMEMBERING FRANK MOORE, AN OREGON LEGEND
This weekend, Oregon bid farewell to a conservation and fly fishing legend, when Frank Moore died at the age of 98. After storming the beaches at Normandy on D-Day in 1944, Moore returned to the North Umpqua and, with wife Jeanne, ran the renowned Steamboat Inn while passionately defending the river and its fish. His life from Normandy to the North Umpqua is beautifully chronicled in the 2014 film Mending the Line . His legacy lives on in the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary , which protects 100,000 acres around the North Umpqua’s Steamboat Creek tributary. We send condolences to the Moore family and celebrate the long run of one of Oregon’s greatest sons.
